Assignment

The mission of the Vision Science Research Network (VSN) is to promote the advancement of knowledge by supporting interdisciplinary research and facilitating the transfer of scientific discoveries to clinical applications. The VSN is committed to promoting the rehabilitation and social integration of people with visual impairments by adopting inclusive practices. It advocates an approach that actively integrates patient-partners and puts forward principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). In the long term, the network aspires to improve the visual health of the population, strengthen the social integration of people with visual impairments, while contributing to sustainable science and the development of environmentally friendly technologies.

Historical

Created in 1995, the Vision Sciences Research Network (VSRN) was born thanks to the determination of a few visionary researchers, led by Dr. Jean-Réal Brunette and, later, Dr. Hélène Boisjoly. Initially supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), this network benefited from government initiatives aimed at promoting interinstitutional collaboration.

They worked to bring together the efforts of vision science researchers in Quebec in order to improve the visual health of Quebecers.

Since its creation, the RRSV has grown significantly, from a few members to a scientific community of over 140 researchers from seven universities across Quebec, such as McGill, Université de Montréal, and Université Laval. Through effective management and strategic initiatives, the network has become a key player in the field of vision science research in Canada. Today, it supports innovative projects in visual therapies, behavioral rehabilitation, and medical technologies, while continuing to play a key role in training the next generation of scientists and developing therapeutic strategies for eye diseases.
