It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Dr. Jean Réal Brunette, our colleague Dre Isabelle Brunette‘s father, on November 10, 2023, at the age of 93. At this difficult time, please join us in offering our most sincere condolences to Dr. Brunette.

Doctor and Professor Jean Réal Brunette is retired from the Department of Surgery, Ophthalmology, at the Université de Sherbrooke‘s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where he was the director for 11 years. A renowned neuro-ophthalmologist and researcher in visual electrophysiology, he was appointed a member of the Medical Research Council. He was also one of the founding members of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Sherbrooke.
Dr. Jean Réal Brunette was also the very first director of the Vision Health Research Network (VHRN) (1995-1996) and laid the initial foundations of the VHRN with, among others, Dr. Hélène Boisjoly. These two founding members, along with Dr. Jacqueline Orquin, Dr. Sylvain Chemtob, Dr. Christian Casanova, Dr. Pierre Lachapelle, Dr. Stéphane Molotchnikoff and Dr. Christian Salesse, laid the foundations of today’s Network, with the aim of developing vision research and improving the visual health of Quebecers.
