Goal
- Facilitate the access to vitreous and retina related specimens in patients operated for different retinal conditions
- Improve our understanding of different vitreo-retinal pathologies and thus improve patient’s care and vision.
Description
Vitrectomy is a surgery performed for various vitreoretinal diseases (including macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal detachment, etc.). During vitrectomy, the vitreous is removed and replaced with another solution. As part of the biobank, and with the patient’s prior consent, we collect part of the vitreous we store it in the biobank. Then, for each sample, relevant clinical data related to the eye condition and patient general health is collected. On the other hand, some patients undergoing vitrectomy may have concomitant retinal diseases such as AMD and diabetic retinopathy. This will allow us to have in the biobank samples from patients with different diseases affecting the eye.
Impact
The potential benefits of creating a retinal biobank are numerous. These samples certainly represent an added value for several research projects. Access to biobank samples will promote translational research and lead to the advancement of biomedical research.
Accessibility
Any researcher member of the Network will be able to submit a request for samples from the biobank. The researcher-applicant must provide proof of the acceptance of his project by the ethics committee of the institution.
