Visual Impairment and Rehabilitation axis
Visual deficits can affect people of all ages and all backgrounds. In North America, in the first part of the 21st century, the vast majority of people suffering from visual deficiencies are the elderly, who develop age-related ocular problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Visual impairment also affects a significant proportion of younger people. Loss of vision during lifetime ranges from loss of acuity caused by different opacifications to loss of central vision or to visual field restrictions.
Independently of the cause of visual impairment, it is important to understand the sensory and perceptual processes, as well as the psychosocial impact of these pathologies. Research in this area aims to improve our understanding of the basic mechanisms of vision in order to ameliorate the prognosis for rehabilitation.
The following pages illustrate the main research topics, the recent discoveries and the list of members of this research axis.
