Database on visual impairment and rehabilitation
Funded from 2008 to 2016
Description of the infrastructure
The infrastructure is a clinical database of 800 visually impaired persons, the construction of which has occurred in Montreal, initially in university-affiliated ophthalmology departments and, subsequently, in a number of private ophthalmology group practices. The goal is to characterize visually impaired individuals who have or have not accessed vision rehabilitation services, thus aiding researchers, clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, and agency administrators in their attempts to increase and enhance the care that they provide to this population. The database contains demographic and psycho-social characteristics visually impaired patients. This provides the possibility to create “profiles” of individuals in this population.
Impact of the infrastructure
This database provides demographic and psycho-social information about visually impaired adults. Eye-care practitioners, rehabilitation-service providers, researchers, and government bodies who may want to conduct their own studies or collaborate among themselves on questions of mutual interest will find it very useful.
Accessibility
The database is available on request and on the submission of a short proposal explaining its intended use. It is understood that standard ethics requirements and intellectual property rules will be respected.
